He was the son of Maldred, son of Bethoc, daughter of Malcolm II, King of Scots (d. 1034). His mother was Ealdgyth, daughter of Uchtred, Earl of Northumberland, whose wife was Elgiva, daughter of Ethelred the Unready, King of England (d. 1016).

Hugh de Dacre, 6th Baron Multon of Gillesland (d. 1383) = Elizabeth (The Visitation of Yorkshire 1563-64 says that she was a daughter of Lord Maxwell), Countess of Atholl, widow of Sir William Douglas of Dalkeith, Earl of Atholl (d. 1353). It was his nephew, Sir James Douglas of Dalkeith (d. 1420), who was granted the Barony of Mordington in 1372 by George Dunbar, 10th Earl of March, on the occasion of the marriage of the Earl's daughter, Agnes Dunbar, to the said Sir James. See 'Scots Peerage' Vol. VI, p. 339-342 & 346. The Douglas family held the barony for 264 years until 1636.
William de Dacre, 7th Baron Multon of Gillesland (d. About 1403) = Said to have been Joan Douglas, illegitimate dau. of James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas and Mar (killed at the Battle of Otterburn, 'Chevy Chase', in 1388), or Mary (See CP. Vol. 4 p. 6). The Visitation of Yorkshire 1563-64 says that she was 'doughter of therl [the earl of] Doglas'.

See William Hutchinson's 'History of the County of Cumberland and Some places Adjacent from the Earliest Accounts to the Present Time' (1794), where a desciption is made of the arms and alliances depicted in the stained glass windows once in the castle of Kirkoswald and alledgedly installed by Thomas, Lord Dacre of the North in the sixteenth century. These included all the Lords and their wives including 'William III [Dacre] married Joane Douglas, ...........buried in Lanercost'.  This would be within one hundred years after the death of Thomas Dacre in 1457 who was the son of the marriage.
